THE ENGAGEMENT

Jared proposed on April 1, 2004, at his swearing-in ceremony in the federal courthouse in Philadelphia.

Having previously been admitted to the court, Laura was to act as Jared's sponsor and character witness. The Judge, enjoying the moment, subjected Laura to some unusual questioning about Jared before offering him the floor. Jared presented Laura a spoof legal 'petition,' complete with exhibits of photographs and mementos chronicling their relationship, and got down on one knee to propose.

Somewhere amid the speechless shock, she said yes! Jared and Laura's family were waiting at a nearby restaurant to celebrate the occasion.
